The Sharjah Prize rewards the efforts of a national of an Arab Member State and a national of any other country, each of whom have contributed through artistic, intellectual or promotional pursuits, to the development and diffusion of Arab culture in the world.
Endowed by the Government of Sharjah (United Arab Emirates), this prize was awarded first in 2001, and then annually in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
The Prize consists of a sum of US$ 50,000 offered by the Government of Sharjah, to be divided equally between the two laureates, selected by the Director-General of UNESCO on the basis of the recommendation of an international jury established for that purpose.
